Ed Carlton - Chief Executive Officer
Ed Carlton is the Chief Executive Officer of the West Georgia Board of REALTORS, and has been so since he un-retired in 2002. He and the Administrative Officer, Debbie Dart, run the office of this growing 800 member association of real estate professionals. Official documents are originated and or stored in the office. Official communication is maintained with the Georgia and National Associations, and the various government entities. Continuing education classes are held monthly, to help members stay knowledgeable, and meet the state requirements for licensure.
Ed and his wife Sue came to the area from North Carolina in 1999, after a 35 year career in finance and mortgages. He is a native of the Atlanta area, and they have grandchildren here; they are the children on Jeff and Michelle Davison. Ed attended Brown High, Emory University , and graduated from Georgia State . He says one of the more exciting educational experiences for him was at the Center for Creative Leadership, a requirement for all new Army generals, at that time. The other was to have the privilege of working as a political volunteer for the Mortgage Bankers of Georgia under renowned attorney Stanley McCalla. Ed and Stan, “and 18 of their best friends” founded the MBA-G in 1972. Later when he learned from a friend in Vermont that no association existed there, he personally consulted for the founding the MBA of Vermont. Service to the industry came again at the Real Estate Trade Group, down at the Georgia Capitol, and expert testimony before the Georgia House and Senate. Other testimonies came before the U.S. House and Senate.
A Georgia based mortgage guaranty company hired Ed in 1978, and he led the company to a 5% national market share and sale to GE Capital in 1990. At GE, Ed was Vice President of Housing Policy and Industry Affairs, representing the company in financial and real estate organizations in the U.S. and beyond. His idea to create a 97% home loan to compete with the FHA was implemented in 1995. He held memberships in the National Homebuilders, American Bankers Association Housing and Real Estate Executive Committee, Real Estate Educators, and received the President's Award at the National Association of Real Estate Brokers. The President's Award from the West Georgia board came in 2004.
Church has always been important to the Carlton family, and here they belong to Central Baptist. Sue started a puppet ministry here, and Ed teaches Sunday School and is a choir member. Sue just finished a year as President of the China Painters of Georgia. They are both mentors at Inner Harbor , and encourage others to sign on to the program!
